			<abstract>
This is a data set providing the location and number of sandhill cranes in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta area as a product of doing aerial, waterfowl desease surveys during the winter months. It is comprised of a shapefile and a separate data table (the extended file). The metadata for this data set (including both the shapefile data table and the extended table) is included here.

Time period covered:
Surveys were made from November through March, from 1993 through 2000.

Number of records:
There are 815 observation records.

Geographic extent of the records:
The aerial surveys were made of 59 designated areas in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta in Sacramento, San Joaquin, Alameda, and Yolo counties.

Base data structure:
The original location data were provided in an Arc 3.x shapefile. The sandhill crane population information in the extended file were provided in a .dbf.

What each record represents:
Each record provide the name and size of the parcel where the cranes were found, the number of cranes seen, and the observation date.
</abstract>
			<purpose>
What the database was designed to do:
It was designed to locate and document cholera outbreaks in wintering waterfowl in the Sacramento - San Joaquin River Delta.

How the database was designed to be used.
It was designed to facilitate the removal of carcasses as a means of slowing the progression of the disease and to locate areas of dead waterfowl so that those areas could be checked again.
</purpose>
			<supplinf>
How the data were collected in the field:
Flights were made through the survey area at about 200-500 feet above the ground looking for flooded areas, and areas where waterfowl were known to occur, to check for dead waterfowl. Flights lasted from one to three hours and at a minimum covered the Delta, but might have included the Yolo Bypass or areas in the Sacramento Valley. Frequently flights were made weekly, weather permitting.

Who collected the data:
The data contributor was the observer on more than 90% of the flights. A DFG seasonal aide was the observer on the other flights.

Who did the initial data compilation:
Dan Gifford, Central Valley-Central Sierra Region, is the data contributor and compiled the data.

Basis for geographic coordinates:

General assumptions of the data:
  * Enough cranes would be observed during a flight to provide an index of numbers and show the general distribution of the cranes in the Delta over time.

Known caveats of the data:
  * The survey was not made with the primary intent of locating and counting sandhill cranes. Cranes were counted when encountered during flights made to find and located dead waterfowl.
  * The location of cranes was recorded by area; no specific locations of observed cranes are given.
  * Numbers of cranes in each individual observation may have been estimated; there are not exact counts representing all cranes seen nor all cranes in the survey area.
