Mark Dettling, Point Blue Conservation Science 20141114 vector digital data http://bios.dfg.ca.gov/ ftp://ftp.dfg.ca.gov/BDB/GIS/BIOS/Public_Datasets//1000_1099/ds1069.zip In 2012-13, Point Blue Conservation Science was contracted by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to conduct surveys for the Western Yellow-billed Cuckoo along the Sacramento and Feather rivers. This data set describes where and when surveys were conducted and the results of each survey. Surveys were conducted in potential cuckoo habitat at randomly selected locations where researchers were able to obtain access. The results of the surveys are detailed in a report submitted to the CDFW. Survey_period Surveys were conducted over four periods (several transects were visited for a fifth visit in 2012). This number designates which period the survey was conducted in. 1 June 15 - June 30 2 July 1 - July 15 3 July 15 - July 31 4 August 1 - August 16 Detect_num Unique detection number for a cuckoo for that survey. The first cuckoo detected on the survey will be numbered 1, if the same individual is detected again later in the survey it is still given Detect_num=1. If another individual is detected it will be given Detect_num=2, and so on. In this way we collect information each time a cuckoo is detected, but also account for the same individual being detected multiple times. Transect_num Three digit number assigned to each transect. Transect numbers are not related between years, meaning transect 002 in 2012 is not in the same area as transect 002 in 2013. Point_num Each point on a transect is given a number, generally between 1 and 35. Detect_type Code for how the cuckoo was initially detected. A audio V visual B both Visit The number of the visit. Usually corresponds to the survey period, but can be different if a follow up survey was conducted. Playback_num Number of playback after which the cuckoo was detected. The cuckoo recording is played 5 times, so this number is between 0 and 5. Bearing Compass bearing (magnetic) of initial cuckoo detection. Distance Estimated distance in meters of initial cuckoo detection. Vocal_code Description of any vocalizations given by cuckoo. Non_survey TRUE or FALSE. If the observations were made during a protocol survey this field is FALSE. If the observations are from field work not following the survey protocol this field is TRUE. Follow_up TRUE or FALSE. If the observations were made on a follow-up survey (an extra survey which was added after a cuckoo was detected along a transect) this field is TRUE. If the observations were made on a scheduled protocol survey then this field is FALSE. Same_day_det TRUE or FALSE. If the observations were of a cuckoo that had been previously detected that day (as determined by the surveyor) this field is TRUE. If the observations are the first time a cuckoo was detected that day (or no detection occurred) this field is FALSE. GPS_acc Accuracy of point in meters taken from the GPS unit when the location was chosen. Zone_ UTM zone of the point. Easting UTM easting coordinates. Northing UTM northing coordinates. For our analysis we only included Yellow-billed Cuckoo detections that were during a protocol surveys, were not repeat detections on the same day, were not on a follow-up visit, and occurred during rounds 1-4.
