This is a data set of the location and number of waterfowl carcasses observed during aerial surveys of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta by survey tract. It is comprised of a shapefile containing location information and a separate data table (the extended file) containing information from the actual observations. This metadata file contains the metadata for both the shapefile data table and the extended table. Surveys were made from November through March, from 1993 through 2000. There are 2494 observation records. The aerial surveys were made of 59 designated areas in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta in Sacramento, San Joaquin, Alameda, and Yolo counties. The original spatial data were provided in an Arc 3.x shapefile. The waterfowl population and carcass count in the extended table was provided in a .dbf. Each record provide the name and size of the parcel where the waterfowl were found, the number of dead waterfowl seen, an index of the total number of waterfowl in the polygon being surveyed, the date of the survey, the number and species of the dead waterfowl picked up, and the date of the carcass collection.
<purpose>The database was designed to locate and document cholera outbreaks in wintering waterfowl in the Sacramento - San Joaquin River Delta. In addition, it was designed to facilitate the removal of carcasses as a means of slowing the progression of the disease and to locate areas of dead waterfowl so that those areas could be checked again.</purpose>
<supplinf>METHODS. Flights were made through the survey area at about 200-500 feet above the ground looking for flooded areas, and areas where waterfowl were known to occur, to check for dead waterfowl. Flights lasted from one to three hours and at a minimum covered the Delta, but might have included the Yolo Bypass or areas in the Sacramento Valley. Frequently flights were made weekly, weather permitting. The data contributor (Dan Gifford, Central Valley-Central Sierra Region) was the observer on more than 90% of the flights. A DFG seasonal aide was the observer on the other flights. The data contributor also compiled the data. GENERAL ASSUMPTIONS OF THE DATA. * Enough dead waterfowl would be observed during a flight to provide to provide a priority areas where dead waterfowl needed to be picked up to reduce mortality. * Not all dead waterfowl were found. The number of dead birds picked up does not represent the total mortality. * It is not know that cholera was the specific cause of death of all of the dead birds enumerated in these data. KNOWN CAVEATS OF THE DATA. * The survey was not made with the primary intent of locating and counting waterfowl. Waterfowl populations were estimated. * The location of dead waterfowl was recorded by area in order to direct on-the-ground pickup of the dead birds.</supplinf>
