This is the Biological Observation Database point layer representing baseline observations of sensitive species (as defined by the MSCP) throughout San Diego County. Points were collected using hand held GPS differentially corrected data loggers, recreational GPS units, and hardcopy maps. Points were found using meandering transect searches of MSCP preserve lands. All surveys and observations were conducted by trained professional biologists.
<purpose>The Biological Observation Database (BOD) is maintained by the County of San Diego Department of Planning and Land Use. This layer serves as a baseline catalog of species records in the MSCP preserve system in the incorporated areas of San Diego County. This layer is used to direct the location of future permanent plot surveys and for uses in various monitoring projects. It is additionally used in the testing and validation of predictive species niche models and to comply with CEQA regulations by tracking sensitive species in relation to county development projects. The BOD is constructed to be interchangeable (e.g., for predictive modeling) with the USFWS Carlsbad office database of sensitive species observations which covers many sensitive fauna observations. Background: The County of San Diego owns or is in the process of acquiring key lands within the Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP) preserve area. The MSCP Biological Monitoring Plan requires monitoring of covered plant species. The County of San Diego was awarded two Natural Communities Conservation Planning (NCCP) Program Local Assistance Grants to accomplish the first phase of the monitoring program, i.e., collecting baseline data for covered plant species. The study area of this grant was amended to include lands in San Vicente (Boys and Girl's Club) Ecological Reserve that were originally included in the statement of work for the NCCP Local Assistance grant No. P0050008. The lands in the total amended study area, from north to south are open space areas in Santa Fe Valley, County-owned portions of Lusardi Creek, open space areas conveyed to the County of San Diego in 4S Ranch, San Vicente Open Space Preserve, McGinty Mountain preserve lands, Hollenbeck Canyon Wildlife Area, and lands north and south of the eastern arm of Otay Lakes. Portions of Rancho Jamul Ecological Reserve were also surveyed. For complete report on MSCP see https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=2825</purpose>
