GIS layers utilized in the creation of the proposed critical habitat for Acanthoscyphus parishii var. goodmaniana (Cushenbury oxytheca) included satellite photography image files (DOQQ and SPOT); USGS DRG image files of topographic maps; soil data; occurrence data from San Bernardino National Forest (SBNF), the California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB), and additional scientific and commercial sources; vegetation data; land ownership data; and elevation data. The Carbonate Species Suitable Habitat Models and ranking system developed by SBNF was also utlilzed. We reclassified the occurrence data into new groupings based on likely hydrogeomorphic and/or topographic relationships, which allowed us to analyze the localized occurrences with respect to general assumptions about the potential biological and ecological dynamics of these groupings, such as seed banks, connectivity and gene flow, and pollinator and seed dispersal vectors. After this analysis, Acanthoscyphus parishii var. goodmaniana (Cushenbury oxytheca) was grouped in 19 aggregate occurrences. Based on the satellite imagery, we identified areas of urban development, active mining, and other ongoing disturbances, and removed these areas from within our aggregate occurrence groupings. We also removed any lands which had been determined to be nonessential during previous consultations completed under section 7 of the Endangered Species Act. The delineated localized boundaries were refined to include potential adjacent seed banks, habitat to maintain natural equilibrium between local extirpation and colonization events, connectivity of suitable habitat to maintain potential gene flow among sites through pollen and seed dispersal, and upslope or upstream geologic substrates that provide the necessary materials to replace the soils which are continalally lost to natural processes. These polygons of essential lands were then snapped to a 100-meter UTM NAD 27 grid. We eliminated any grid cells where either the entire cell or the majority of the cell was within a disturbed area. Cells that had documented localized plant occurrences were retained even if the majority of the cell was disturbed.
