      <procstep>
        <procdesc>The critical habitat for the desert pupfish (Cyprinodon macularius) was determined by the Portland, Oregon Fish and Wildlife Office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Although critical habitat for the desert pupfish (Cyprinodon macularius) was designated in both California and Arizona, this coverage contains only the critical habitat which is located within the state of California.
In California, the species exists only in two Salton Sea tributaries (the San Felipe Creek system and its associated wetland San Sebastian Marsh, Imperial County, and Salt Creek, Riverside County), and in a few shoreline pools and irrigation drains along the Salton Sea in Imperial and Riverside Counties. Surveys conducted in 1983 of Salt Creek and the irrigation drains around the Salton Sea indicated that the populations there were reduced to such low levels they were no longer viable. Therefore, in California critical habitat was designated only along San Felipe Creek west of State Highway 86, and along San Felipe Creek's tributaries Carrizo Wash and Fish Creek Wash. The critical habitat consist of the stream channel and a riparian buffer of 100 feet on each side of the stream channel. The buffer zones were deemed necessary because any activities that are carried out adjacent to the channel may have direct impact on the quality of aquatic habitat for the desert pupfish (Cyprinodon macularius).
The polygons in this coverage were digitized by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Riverside, California, using U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000 1996 digital orthophoto quarter quadrangle (DOQQ) files, and based on the information provided in the legal description of the final critical habitat for the desert pupfish (Cyprinodon macularius) published in the Federal Register, March 31, 1986, Vol. 51, No. 61, pages 10842-10851. Because the location of the stream channel continues to change over time as the stream meanders, this coverage of the critical habitat identifies the area in which the stream had historically meandered as evident in the 1996 DOQQs, with a 100-foot buffer added around it. The legal critical habitat consists of the current-day stream channel and a 100-foot buffer on each side of it.</procdesc>
