    <descript>
To provide the user with a general idea of areas where final critical habitat for desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) occur based on the description provided in the Federal Register. The geographic extent includes Mohave County, Arizona ; Washington County, Utah ; Clark and Lincoln Counties, Nevada ; and Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, California.
      <purpose>Critical habitat are areas considered essential for the conservation of a listed species. These areas provide notice to the public and land managers the importance of these areas to the conservation of this species. Special protections and/or restrictions are possible in areas where federal funding, permits, licenses, authorizations, or actions occur or are required.</purpose>

    <logic>This data is believed to be logically consistent. Because of changes in the sections and quarter quarters between when the Federal Register was written and now, some of the sections and quarter quarters do not line up with current PLSS section and quarter quarter shapefiles. When this happens, we used the data that was in effect when the Federal Register was written. Whenever the edge of the critical habitat goes across at an angle or squiggles along, it is following a road, a wash or an administrative boundary. Check the wording in the Federal Register to verify what it's following and use that as a guide. Highways, washes and administrative boundaries tend to follow different paths on different maps, but they are pretty static in the real world!</logic>
