The Bureau of Land Management conducted extensive sensitive plant surveys through the full extent of the Algodones Dunes during Spring 2005. The BLM surveys compiled data in adjacent 25 X 25-meter cells along 4-5 Km survey transects throughout the dunes. A total of 123,488 cells were surveyed in 2005 along transects totaling 1,922 miles (3,095 km). The GIS model defining Peirson's milk-vetch designated critical habitat is based upon the 2005 BLM survey data. We selected occupied survey cells with a plant density greater than 480 plants per hectare (ha) (30 plants per cell) (192 plants per acre) as core areas. We used a density of 480 plants per ha since this captured the majority of the large clusters of standing plants. We expanded each core area (25 X 25-m cell) to 2 ha, then merged the 2-ha core areas within 100-m proximate of each other to form aggregated core areas. Outlying or remote core areas greater than 400 meters from adjacent core areas and core areas less than 400 m away but with a plant density less than approximately 370 plants (=0.0005 of the total observed population of 739,805) within the aggregated core area. This step allowed us to remove core areas with low numbers of plants considered not essential to the conservaiton of the species. We then overlaid a 100-meter UTM NAD83 grid onto the final core areas to define the legal boundaries.
