In developing critical habitat for the bay checkerspot, we used the Recovery Plan for Serpentine Soil Species of the San Francisco Bay Area (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 1998), data on known and historic locations of populations of the butterfly and maps of serpentine soils to identify potentially important areas. We then, through the use of 1990's digital orthophotos (Bay Area Digital GeoResource [BADGER] website http://badger.parl.com) and limited ground checking, estimated the current extent of suitable habitat. We included in critical habitat both suitable habitat and areas that link suitable habitat, since these links facilitate movement of individuals between habitat areas, which is important for dispersal and gene flow. In selecting areas of proposed critical habitat, we made an effort to avoid developed areas such as buildings, lawns, landscaped areas, intensive agricultural areas such as row crops, vineyards and orchards, and other lands unlikely to contribute to bay checkerspot conservation. We have not excluded all such areas, mainly in the interest of having a clear boundary that is easy to locate in the field, or because we lack complete information about the current extent of non-habitat areas. For critical habitat boundaries we typically used roads, landmarks such as elevation points shown on U.S. Geological Survey 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle maps, watercourses and elevation contours shown on these maps, and lines running between or at a defined distance from described features.
