CRFS catch records for Cabezon, Greenling, Kelpbass, Lingcod, Rockfish, Scorpionfish, and Sheephead are aggregated for this analysis. All catch of these species were summed by year and attributed to the locations which were recorded during the survey interview. The total number of anglers that targeted “bottom fish” in each block by year was also determined. CPUA is a simple calculation of the number of fish caught divided by the number of anglers targeting those species within a particular 1’ block in a given period. This summary includes the statewide CRFS sample data filtered to blocks where a minimum of 4 anglers per year visited that location.
<purpose>California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (CDFW) California Recreational Fisheries Survey (CRFS) – private and rental boat survey data – are summarized by yearly catch per unit angler (CPUA) of reef dwelling fishes within standard 1’ reporting blocks. This feature illustrates fishing locations and catch rates at relatively high spatial resolution. In addition to private and rental boat tracking, CRFS also collects data on commercial passenger fishing vessels (CPFV – AKA party boats), beach and bank fishing as well as fishing from manmade structures. This feature focuses on private and rental boats only.</purpose>
<supplinf>Raw data were extracted from the CRFS (RecFIN) database on May 25, 2016 for all catch and effort (with location) tables. Attributes about start date, end date, number of anglers participating, trip type, and 10 separate fields identifying locations fished are utilized. Each trip record in the effort table has a 1:∞ relationship to catch records joined by the key field [IDCODE]. Because each unique trip (effort) record may be coded to multiple 1’ fishing blocks. Records show as many as 6 fishing blocks visited per individual trip. After transformation to normalize the unique fishing blocks per trip, the catch and effort are joined in ∞:∞ relationship. Because catch records are related to (and counted at) the individual trip level, the data schema does not allow for parsing of specific catch within a single trip to differential fishing blocks recorded for that trip. In order to address the total trip catch recorded across multiple blocks, catch is weighted by the number blocks encountered in the trip then distributed evenly to all blocks reported (e.g. 1 trip visits 3 blocks and catches 3 fish of species X = 1 species X attributed to each block recorded).</supplinf>
