These are modified from the Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP) cores and Multiple Habitat Conservation Program (MHCP) Focused Planning Areas (FPA) to take into account a broader landscape of western San Diego County. A core area is defined as a contiguous area of relatively intact natural vegetative cover that is at least 1,250 acres in size and with little or no permanent internal fragmentation from human development. In some cases, Core Habitat Areas smaller than 1,250 acres have been included where valuable biological resources exist in localized areas (e.g., lagoons, vernal pools, cactus habitat). In addition to Conserved Lands, Core Habitat Areas may include un-conserved but intact habitat on private lands, military lands, utility lands (e.g., water districts), and tribal lands. A letter (A-Z, plus AA) was assigned to each of the 27 cores.
