This feature class contains pest and fire mortality mapped during surveys from 1973 to 2019 in California and USFS Region 5, https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/r5/forest-grasslandhealth/?cid=fsbdev3_046696. Includes estimates of trees per acre and number of trees affected, tree species affected, damage type, and damage causing agents when available. Data collected in or near California by USFS Regions 4 and 6 are also included. Detailed methods, standards and guidelines are available at the Forest Health Technology Enterprise Team website: http://www.fs.fed.us/foresthealth/technology/ads_standards.shtml.
<purpose>Map tree mortality and other forest damage from 1973 to 2019 in USFS Region 5 and California. Suitable for regional applications only (1:100,000 scale or smaller). The end user of this data should be advised that the aerial detection surveys were undertaken in single-engine high-wing aircraft flying 1,000 to 2,000 feet above ground level, sometimes in hazy or turbulent conditions. Since surveyors visually scan areas up to two miles in either direction of the aircraft, mortality on the opposing side of ridges or peaks may be obscured. Due to these data collection limitations polygon boundaries may not be exact representations of features found on the ground. Caution is advised when attempting to overlay ADS data with other raster or aerial photography features. See Use Constraints for more information.</purpose>

<useconst>Suitable for regional applications only (1:100,000 scale or smaller). Locations of some polygons may not be accurate due to errors in the aerial sketch maps, the compilation process, digitizing, or a combination of these factors. The US Forest Service, Oregon Department of Forestry and Washington Department of Natural Resources do not guarantee the validity or accuracy of these data. The user specifically agrees not to misrepresent these data, nor to imply that changes made were approved by the agencies listed above. The USDA Forest Service makes no claims, promises, or guarantees about the accuracy, completeness, or adequacy of the content; and expressly disclaims liability for errors and omissions. No warranty of any kind, implied, expressed or statutory, including but not limited to warranties of non-infringement of third party rights, title, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and freedom from computer virus, is given with respect to the contents or hyperlinks to other Internet resources. Reference to any specific commercial products, processes, or services, or the use of any trade, firm or corporation name is for the information and convenience of the public, and does not constitute endorsement or recommendation by the USDA Forest Service. Because the damage agents are mapped from the air, exact identification of the specific tree host, insect, disease and/or damage causal agent cannot be guaranteed. Completeness is variable. The intent is to survey all forested lands in California, but in any given year, this may not happen for various reasons (weather, fires, funding, etc.). The horizontal accuracy of these data are limited to scales at which the aerial survey was conducted. Even when used at appropriate scales, positional accuracy is variable. Users must exercise caution regarding the spatial accuracy of these data due to the subjective nature of aerial sketch mapping time constraints and the scale of data collection.Disclaimer: The State makes no claims, promises, or guarantees about the accuracy, completeness, reliability, or adequacy of these data and expressly disclaims liability for errors and omissions in these data. No warranty of any kind, implied, expressed, or statutory, including but not limited to the warranties of non-infringement of third party rights, title, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and freedom from computer virus, is given with respect to these data.</useconst>
