This shapefile is a set of polygons representing the current range and the area where a consultation under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) may be necessary for Franklin's bumblebee (Bombus franklini).
<purpose>The polygons contained in this shapefile delineate the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Current Range and Species List Area (SLA) for Franklin's bumblebee (Bombus franklini). These data inform the public of where the species may occur on the landscape and provide the basis for generating species lists in Information for Planning and Consultation (IPAC).</purpose>

<procdesc>The field office created a best-fit polygon around all of the known locations for Franklin’s bumblebee, which was last detected in 2006 at Mt. Ashland, Jackson County, Oregon. Then they buffered that polygon out by 6km, which was used as the average maximum dispersal distance, based on expert elicitation. They then clipped the southeastern edge of the range along the crest of the Cascades, as the species was never detected east of the crest. Geography does not appear to be a barrier to their dispersal; despite being found at elevations higher than several mountain passes to the south and east of their range. Franklin's bumblebee was never found outside the five counties of Jackson, Josephine, and Douglas Counties in Oregon, and Trinity and Siskiyou Counties in California.</procdesc>
