    <descript>
These data identify the areas designated as critical habitat for the Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep. Critical habitat for the species occurs in twelve units: Mount Warren, Mount Gibbs, Convict Creek, Wheeler Ridge, Taboose Creek, Sawmill Canyon, Mount Baxter, Mount Williamson, Big Arroyo, Mount Langley, Laurel Creek and Olancha Peak. These units are in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California in Fresno, Inyo, Mono, Tulare and Tuolumne Counties.
      <purpose>To provide the user with a graphical representation, viewable within a GIS, of the boundaries of critical habitat as described in the Federal Register vol. 73, number 151, pages 45534 - 45604.</purpose>

        <procdesc>Critical habitat boundaries were based on polygons created by the California Department of Fish and Game for the Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep Recovery Plan (Recovery Plan). Polygons developed for the Recovery Plan reflect modeled summer and winter foraging, resting and movement habitats. For this rule we included 12 of the 16 areas identified through the Recovery Plan's modeling process. These 12 units were edited using the "generalize" command (2 meter maximum allowable offset) to reduce the number of vertices defining the polygon. The generalized polygons were then overlain on aerial imagery (National Agricultural Imagery Progam, 2005) and manually edited to remove existing development.</procdesc>
