    <descript>
This data set contains bathymetric isolines for the Salton Sea at an interval of five feet. This data was generated from the sounding points taken by Bureau of Reclamation staff as part of a reconnaissance study perfomed for the Salton Sea Science Advisory Committee. This data has been extensively computer-generalized and manually smoothed using a graphic editor. Every fifth contour has also been coded as an index contour to mimic conventional symbolization of topography and bathymetry, and all contours have been assigned both elevation and depth.
      <purpose>This data was automated to support normal graphic products of the Salton Sea in which depth or elevation of the lake bed are required. For engineering purposes, the user should return to the original sounding points to regenerate a lake floor surface, but for cartographic depiction, this database should be sufficient.</purpose>
      <supplinf>Initially upon generation, many contours overlapped as an artifact of the arc interpolation techniques, and due to the state of the points, which display anomalous linear patterns indicative of a certain degree of error within specific transects. These linear patterns were largely filtered out in generating the isolines, but some topographic features suggestive of islands may be remaining artifacts of the data points and their interpolation. This data is considered preliminary, and will be updated once additional shoreline and sounding data becomes available.</supplinf>
