This data set shows all the on-water or very nearshore avian resources used for nesting and roosting by specific bird species of interest around the Salton Sea. Initial data capture was by Ken Sturm, but later supplemented by other workers, including Kathy Molina. GPS readings, text descriptions and imagery were used to generate polygons of interest. In some cases, the features were essentially points (specific duck blinds, or a partially submerged barge), but were converted into polygons by buffering. Other features were encompassed by GPS readings, and still others were interpreted from aerial imagery. All sites were attributed according to whether the site was used historically for nesting or roosting by any of a suite of specific bird species, and particularly to indicate if the site was used in 1999, when the surveys were made. These features also constitute on-water hazards for navigational purposes. Disclaimer: DFG received this dataset from the University of Redlands please contact them directly with any questions.
<purpose>This data was assembled to provide an overview of on-water or nearshore avian resources used by the birds around the Salton Sea, with special focus on roosting and nesting sites, especially snag fields, but also including duck blinds, submerged houses and barges, telephone polls, etc. These features also constitute hazards to navigation on the Salton Sea.</purpose>
<supplinf>Several different methods of data handling and normalization were used in the construction of this layer. Some snags were nearly too small to be seen, and their location can be considered approximated. In some cases, specific GPS points were captured for a given snag, but snags were generally aggregated into "fields", and studied collectively.</supplinf>

<procdesc>This data was started by GPS readings, text descriptions and maps generated during field work by Ken Sturm of USFWS. This work was turned over to the Redlands Institute for automation. Some features, being point in nature, were buffered to provide a polygon area. Others snag fields were encompassed by Sturm in a boat. Other features were taken from text descriptions, and the features were then photo-interpreted from DOQQ imagery. All features were attributed according to historical usage of the site by various species of interest, and in particular, if the site was used by a given species in 1999. Other attributes indicate rookery name, alternate labels, and other information.</procdesc>
