The "rxburn" dataset contains perimeters from multiple agencies, representing prescribed fires, fire use, machine pile burns, hand pile burns and jackpot burns, with associated tabular data for responsible agency, project number, project name, start date, acres reported and more. Data provided are merged from sources of varying quality. There has been a significant amount of work to resolve duplicate prescribed fires (from different sources). This layer is a best attempt and does not include complete data for all agencies. Two of the attributes in this dataset, PRE_CON_CLASS and POST_CON_CLASS are based on an abstract concept called "Condition Class." There is more information about "Condition Class" in the Overview Description / Entity and Attribute Overview section.Version 23_1 was released in May 2024 and includes 1,134 fire related fuel treatments from: BLM (15), CAL FIRE (95) & Contract Counties (16), CA State Parks (103), Local Response Area (6), NPS (8), USFS (835), USFW (4), private (20) and other (32) for projects completed in 2023.
<purpose>Prescribed fires consume and rearrange natural fuel on the landscape. This data is used to update fuel models maintained by CAL FIRE and its cooperating agencies, other state departments and private organizations. Treatments are tracked as part of the California Strategic Fire Plan in order to identify where previous fire use allowed wildfire to be fought at a lower cost and helped prevent losses.</purpose>
<supplinf>No prescribed burn data for Alameda and San Francisco counties.</supplinf>

<useconst>This is a reasonably complete digital record of modern fire use history in California. However, it is still incomplete in many respects. Fires may be missing altogether or have missing or incorrect attribute data. Some burns may be missing because historical records were lost or damaged, were too small for the minimum cutoffs, had inadequate documentation or have not yet been incorporated into the database. Other errors with the fire perimeter database include duplicate fires and over-generalization. The data capture process attempts to identify duplicate fires resulting from multiple data sources (i.e. the USFS and CAL FIRE both captured and submitted the fire perimeter), some duplicates may still exist. Additionally, over-generalization, particularly with large old fires may show unburned "islands" within the final perimeter as burned or where treatment areas were defined but geometry was not modified to account for actual burned area. Users of the fire perimeter database must exercise caution in application of the data. Careful use of the fire perimeter database will prevent users from drawing inaccurate or erroneous conclusions from the data.Disclaimer: The State makes no claims, promises, or guarantees about the accuracy, completeness, reliability, or adequacy of these data and expressly disclaims liability for errors and omissions in these data. No warranty of any kind, implied, expressed, or statutory, including but not limited to the warranties of non-infringement of third party rights, title, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and freedom from computer virus, is given with respect to these data.</useconst>

    <overview>

Condition Class:
Condition class refers to the general deviation of ecosystems from their pre-settlement natural
fire regime (See attributes REGIME and REGIME_CAL of Cal Fire Fire Regime and Condition Class data set a the same location as this data), and can be viewed as a measure of sensitivity to
fire damage to key elements and processes typical of those ecosystems, or fire-related risk to
ecosystem health. Fundamental to this idea is that current expected fires are compared to
historic fire regimes with respect to fire frequency, size and patchiness, and effects on key
ecosystem elements and processes. These classes are then assigned based on current vegetation
type and structure, an understanding of its pre-settlement fire regime, and current conditions
regarding expected fire frequency and potential fire behavior. Condition Classes were thus
defined as the relative risk of losing key components that define an ecosystem (Hardy et al.,
2001). The conceptual basis is that for fire-adapted ecosystems, much of their ecological
structure and processes are driven by fire, and disruption of fire regimes leads to changes in plant composition and structure, uncharacteristic fire behavior and other disturbance agents (pests),
altered hydrologic processes and increased smoke production. Condition Class 1 is associated
with low level disruption of fire regime, and consequently low risk to loss or damage. Condition
Class 2 indicates some degree of departure from natural regimes, with associated changes in
ecosystem composition and structure that render future fires a likelihood of some loss and
change in elements and processes. Condition class 3 is highly divergent from natural regime
conditions, and presents the highest level of risk of loss. For more information of condition classes see: Hann, Wendel J. 2002. Mapping fire regime condition class: a method for watershed and project scale analysis.
CON_CLASS DESCRIPTION
------------------ --------------------
1 Fire regime within or near historical range. Risk of key ecosystem component
loss low.
2 Fire regime moderately altered from historical range. Risk of key ecosystem
component loss moderate.
3 Fire regime significantly altered from historical range. Risk of key ecosystem
component loss high.
