This dataset represents sensitive wildlife data collected for the Center for Natural Lands Management (CNLM) at dedicated nature preserves in San Diego County, California. Data included were collected by CNLM staff, their subcontractors, as well as by biological consulting firms that conducted surveys for developers prior to preserve dedication to CNLM (which occurred in 2000), and spans from 1998 to 2007. Preserves were dedicated during different years, please call CNLM if you want information regarding year of preserve dedication. Most records in this dataset were collected during sensitive species research surveys, but some are anecdotal sitings. All sensitive bird species were located during focused U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service protocol surveys for listed species such as the coastal California gnatcatcher (CAGN) and least Bell's vireo. For example, we (and our subcontractors) survey no more than about 100 acres per day for CAGN and note all sensitive species we detect. We conduct these surveys 2-5 days per area per survey year, depending on need (i.e. not necessarily every year). Most sensitive species were mapped on aerial photos during surveys, and then later transferred to GIS. Some of our least Bell's vireo data includes nesting data, as we are studying breeding status at selected preserves. The nests are located using GPS, with an accuracy of 1 to 3 meters. In addition to noting all sensitive bird species during surveys, this dataset also represents other sensitive taxa that we observe during the bird surveys, such as orange-throated whiptail or San Diego horned lizard. At some preserves, we have conducted focused reptile surveys as well, which is noted in the Notes section of the table. Last, this dataset does not represent all sensitive species observed by CNLM. For example, CNLM has conducted surveys using bird point counts and herp arrays. For example, we have observed a high abundance of rufous-crowned sparrows at our Rancho La Costa Preserve during bird point counts, and this data will be incorporated at a future date. Data may be distributed.
<purpose>The data was created so that CNLM biologists could study changes in abundance and distribution of sensitive species at its preserves, but also to comply with HCP conditions for CNLM reserve managers.</purpose>
<supplinf>Information about how the data was collected is provided in Annual Reports for each Preserve, which are provided to each jurisdiction, CDFG and USFWS, annually. Some data that is shown outside preserve limits is generally pre-construction data collected by biological consulting firms or slight plotting or reprojection errors. In general, CNLM works in UTM, zone 11N, NAD 83, meters. However, our subcontractors have worked in various coordinate systems and we have reprojected their data to our system. From about 2000 to 2005, CNLM worked with ArcView 3.2. In about 2005, we moved to ArcView 9.1. All data have been compiled by Markus Spiegelberg. Species observed during surveys and reported here include: MAMMALS - Bobcat Mountain Lion San Diego Black-tailed Jackrabbit Southern Mule Deer BIRDS - American bittern Barn Owl Bell's Sage Sparrow California Horned Lark Coastal California Gnatcatcher Cooper's Hawk Golden eagle Grasshopper Sparrow Great Horned Owl Greater Roadrunner Least Bell's Vireo Loggerhead Shrike Northern Harrier Red-tailed Hawk Southern California Rufous-crowned Sparrow Southwestern Willow Flycatcher White-tailed Kite Yellow-breasted Chat Yellow Warbler REPTILES - Coast Patch-nosed snake Coastal Western Whiptail Northern Red-diamond Rattlesnake Orange - throated Whiptail San Diego Horned Lizard</supplinf>
