This dataset represents the historic ranges of native trout in California. Data were developed by CDFW Heritage and Wild Trout staff.
This dataset illustrates the historic ranges of twelve native trout species in California.
The historic trout range polygons were originally digitized and processed with ARC/Info rev 7.0.4 in March 1998 by Mike Byrne, GIS Specialist, California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG), based on range descriptions by Eric Gerstung, CDFG Fisheries Biologist. The result was the "troutrange" polygon coverage which was used to produce the "Inland Trout and Salmon of California, Historic Ranges, Designated Wild Trout Waters, Trout Planting Locations" map poster.
In April 2001, the "troutrange" coverage was converted into the "troutrange" shapefile data set with ArcView GIS ver. 3.2a. An ArcGIS projection file (.prj) was added later to the shapefile data set, then reprojected from NAD27 to NAD83 with ArcGIS 9 by Rod Gonzalez, CDFW GIS Analyst.
In December 2016, additional revisions were made to the historic watersheds by GIS Specialist Janet Brewster, based on input from CDFW fisheries biologists Stephanie Hogan, Jeff Weaver, and Roger Bloom.
