This data set is an intersection of all 63 vector polygon ranges depicted in the following publication with a statewide grid of 25 square mile hexagon cells. Shuford, W.D., and Gardali, T., editors. 2008. California Bird Species of Special Concern: A ranked assessment of species, subspecies, and distinct populations of birds of immediate conservation concern in California. Studies of Western Birds 1. Western Field Ornithologists, Camarillo, California, and California Department of Fish and Game. Sacramento. http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/species/ssc/birds.html The vector polygon ranges were hand drawn at a scale of 1:6,600,000 by authors and editors of the Bird Species of Special Concern report and digitized into shapefiles by staff of the Biogeographic Data Branch, California Department of Fish and Game. The hexagon grid for the state was created by Steve Goldman by modifying an AML (Arc Macro Language) script originally written by Eric Kauffman.
<purpose>The intersection of the range maps with fine-scale hexagon cells allows for a rapid query of any portion of the state for the presence of taxa that are Bird Species of Special Concern. The resulting table lists all taxa whose ranges intersect the selected area and includes the attributes of each intersected polygon for a taxa (whether the area selected is part of the current breeding range for a species or intersects its historic range or a record of uncertainty, for example).</purpose>
<supplinf>Details regarding the mapping process for the 63 ranges may be found on pages 16-18 of the publication cited above. Ranges were hand drawn at a scale of 1:6,600,000 and then digitized after a team of mappers from the Bird Species of Special Concern (BSSC) project evaluated but ultimately rejected the range mapping protocol of the California Wildlife Habitat Relationships (CWHR) System, which calls for delineating a range at a scale of 1:1,000,000 and favors the use of standarized ecological unit boundaries. Expert review of a BSSC range for a species was later applied to the CWHR data set using the mapping standards of CWHR. A comparison of the two range maps for a species will show differences, but only due to the different mapping protocols of BSSC and CWHR. For example, users may notice that the same range polygon is present for a species in both data sets, but the boundary is complex in the CWHR data because of it represents a preexisting digitized ecological subsection and smooth in the BSSC data set because it has been hand drawn and then digitized. Also, polygons representing historic range are mapped in BSSC but not in CWHR. Polygons representing a portion of the range not of BSSC concern for a species - such as the winter range of a breeding species - are mapped in CWHR but not in BSSC.</supplinf>
