    <descript>
This is the planning boundary for the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP). This boundary was jointly developed and approved by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the California Energy Commission.
      <purpose>For use in the DRECP planning process.</purpose>
      <supplinf>This dataset replaces the "Selected_Ecoregions_Dissolve.shp". The DRECP planning boundary encompasses the Mojave, Sonoran, and Colorado Desert Ecoregions. The western side of the boundary was modified using the March 11, 2010 Competitive Renewable Energy Zone (CREZ) boundaries. The boundary description reads as follows: Starting at the intersection of the northeastern edge of the Mojave Desert Ecoregion and the eastern side of Inyo County follow the Inyo County boundary south until it reaches the Southeastern Great Basin Ecoregion. Follow the Mojave Desert Ecoregion / Southeastern Great Basin Ecoregion boundary until it meets up with the Inyo County (California / Nevada) boundary. Follow the California / Nevada boundary south until it reaches the Arizona border. Follow the California / Arizona border south until it reaches the Mexican border. Follow the California / Mexican border west until it reaches the Colorado Desert Ecoregion boundary. Follow the Colorado Desert Ecoregion boundary north until it reaches the intersection of Riverside and San Diego counties. At the intersection of Riverside and San Diego counties buffer the Colorado and Mojave Desert Ecoregions boundaries by 5 miles. Buffer the Tehachapi CREZ by 5 miles. Follow the 5 mile Ecoregion buffer north until it reaches the 5 mile Tehachapi CREZ buffer. Follow the 5 mile Tehachapi CREZ buffer north until it reaches the 5 mile Ecoregion buffer. Follow the 5 mile Ecoregion buffer north until it reaches the intersection of Kern and Inyo counties. At the intersection of Kern and Inyo counties continue to follow the non-buffered Mojave Desert Ecoregion boundary northeast back to the point of beginning.</supplinf>

        <procdesc>The DRECP planning boundary was digitized by using the 20081230 USDA Ecoregion geodatabase (EcoregionsCalifornia07_2.mdb) and encompasses the Mojave, Sonoran, and Colorado Desert Ecoregions. The western side of the boundary was modified using the 20090812 Competitive Renewable Energy Zone (CREZ) boundaries and the California counties layer. Follow the Colorado Desert Ecoregion boundary north until it reaches the Imperial South CREZ. Where the Imperial South CREZ extends outside of the Colorado Desert Ecoregion boundary follow the CREZ boundary. Buffer the CREZ boundaries and the Ecoregion boundaries by 5 miles starting at the intersection of Riverside and San Diego counties and heading north until the intersection of Kern and Inyo counties. Continue to follow the Mojave Desert Ecoregion boundary northeast back to the point of beginning.</procdesc>
