A product of the California Essential Habitat Connectivity Project - http://www.dfg.ca.gov/habcon/connectivity/, potential riparian connections were extracted from the Statewide 1:100k Routed Hydrography for California dataset (CDFG, Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission September 2003 - see original metadata elsewhere in this document). The original data file is a 1:100,000-scale stream-based routed hydrography covering the entire State of California. Named rivers and streams that were 30,000 feet in length or longer were extracted from the dataset and added to Figures 3.1 to 3.9 in the report. These potential riparian connections were added to illustrate the contribution of streams and rivers in providing additional avenues for terrestrial and aquatic connectivity to the network of Natural Landscape Blocks and Essential Connectivity Areas. This analysis was conducted by SC Wildlands.
<purpose>These potential riparian connections were added to illustrate the contribution of streams and rivers in providing additional avenues for terrestrial and aquatic connectivity to the network of Natural Landscape Blocks and Essential Connectivity Areas developed for the California Essential Habitat Connectivity Project.</purpose>
<supplinf>-- BEGIN ORIGINAL METADATA - THIS INFORMATION MAY NOT BE CURRENT -- Identification_Information: Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: California Department of Fish and Game Originator: Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission Publication_Date: September 2003 Title: cdfg_100k_2003_6 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data Online_Linkage: \\ISB-EHANEY\D$\aaa\a_Hydro\NAD83\cdfg_100k_2003_6.shp Description: Abstract: Cdfg_100k_2003_6.shp is a 1:100,000 scale stream based routed hydrography covering the entire State of California. This measured shapefile was derived from an Arc/Info coverage. The coverage utilizes existing National Hydrography Database (NHD) 1:100,000 linework and attributes as well as Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) identifiers as guidelines to determine the stream networks that were referenced into routes. Utilizing both automatic routines developed by California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) and Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC) staff as well as manual (on screen) networking techniques, a series of arcs from the NHD were networked into a stream first by the existence of a GNIS stream ID. If no GNIS stream ID was present for a series of arcs, like NHD "Level" attributes were used to determine the network. The resulting routes represent what are commonly referred to as streams under the aforementioned guidelines. Streams are catalogued with a unique LLID identifier. Although derived from Latitude/Longitude coordinates, the LLID should be used as a stream identifier only and not as a spatial identifier. Purpose: The combination of established streams (GNIS) and calculated stream levels (relating flow with spatial attributes) creates a stream layer more complete and compatible with fisheries applications. Stream based hydrography expands the options available for storing location information by reducing the number of records needed to describe a location event. As a result, CDFG/PSMFC as well as other users will benefit from the stream based hydrography in its efforts to maintain a large database of stream based data. Supplemental_Information: Explanation of the addition of new linework into the hydrography and the exclusion of NHD linework from the hydrography can be found in the Data Quality section of this document. Not all of the linework available for the coverage area was used in the development of the dataset. Only linework that represents valid stream networks in the opinion of the data technician was used to network streams. Other linework such as what was considered an outlying stream or an unroutable canal or pipeline network was not included. This linework is available for future consideration for inclusion into the dataset. Also, additional linework was digitized by the data technician to complete stream networks where digitized linework is not available from the NHD but stream delineation is present on USGS 1:24,000 or 1:100,000 quadrangles. New linework was digitized on screen (heads up) at a scale of 1:10,000 or larger. Record of CDFG added linework can be found in the bigroutes coverage arc feature attribute table, field Ftype, attribute DFG CONNECTOR. Process_Step: Process_Description: Metadata imported.
