    <descript>
These data identify the areas (in general) where critical habitat for Braunton's milk-vetch occurs. Critical habitat for the species consists of approximately 3,300 acres among six units distributed in three general areas: eastern Ventura County, east-central Los Angeles County, and northeastern Orange County, California.
      <purpose>Critical habitat are areas considered essential for the conservation of a listed species. These areas provide notice to the public and land managers the importance of these areas to the conservation of this species. It does not afford any special protection or restriction other than where federal funding, permits, licenses, authorizations, or actions occur or are required.</purpose>

      <procstep>
        <procdesc>U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists identified critical habitat areas by using spatial data layers acquired from the State of California Natural Heritage Program's Natural Diversity Data Base, USDA's National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP), and plant occurence data from private individuals. In order to define when patches were within a single population and include areas likely to support a seed bank, we conducted a nearest neighbor analysis using all available mapped occurrences. We determined the distance from the centroid of each mapped occurrence or ‘‘patch’’ to the centroid of the nearest mapped occurrence. The average distance between patch centroids within populations was 935 ft (285 m). To encompass contiguous areas of adjacent habitat that is likely to contain a seed bank we then buffered the mapped occurrence polygons by 285 meters. Polygons created by this method were connected if they were within 1,968 feet (600 m) based upon minimum flight distance data for insect pollenators of the species. The resulting polygons were edited manually to remove existing development, roads, landscaping, or other areas unlikely to contain the primary constituent elements of critical habitat. This editing step was accomplished by overlaying the initial polgyon boundaries on aerial imagery (NAIP, 2005). Edited polyon boundaries were modified in ArcMap with the "generalize" command (2 meter maximum allowable offset) to decrease the number of vertices defining a polygon boundary. The x,y coordinate pairs defining the vertices of the "generalized" polygons were further edited by rounding to whole meter values.</procdesc>
