These data identify, in general, the areas of Final critical habitat for Chlorogalum purpureum var. purpureum and C. p. var. reductum (Purple amole and Camatta Canyon amole).
      <purpose>Critical habitat constitutes areas considered essential for the conservation of a listed species. These areas provide notice to the public and land managers of the importance of the areas to the conservation of this species. Special protections and/or restrictions are possible in areas where Federal funding, permits, licenses, authorizations, or actions occur or are required.</purpose>

        <procdesc>Distribution data for the Camatta Canyon amole was compiled from the California Natural Diversity Data Base (CNDDB) and independent field biologists. New location data were digitized, combined with the CNDDB information and used as the base distribution of the species. Based upon the potential movements of pollinators, local topography, and vegetation, our proposed critical habitat boundary surrounded the known populations of the species at a distance of 1/2 mile. For the Final Rule, the boundary from the proposed rule was overlain on aerial photography (AirPhoto USA, May 2000) and USGS digital raster graphic data. With these base data layers the vertices of the boundary polygon were manually edited such that the new boundary excluded buildings, steep slopes, and dense vegetation that was immediately adjacent to the proposed boundary. The result of the modifications was to reduce the total area of critical habitat; the boundary was modified in some places to include small areas of potentially suitable habitat lying outside of, but adjacent to, the proposed boundary for the Final Rule.</procdesc>
      </procstep>
      <procstep>
        <procdesc>U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists identified critical habitat areas for purple amole by using spatial data layers provided by the Deparment of Defence, the State of California Natural Heritage Program's Natural Diversity Data Base, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, and data from private individuals. We identified the general areas on which to focus our critical habitat designations based on the following data: the distribution of the species; the distribution of the soils in San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties on which the plant is known to occur (Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO) databases (U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA] 1998-2001), and the California State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) databases (USDA 1994) ); the slope on which the plant is known to occur (derived from USGS 10 meter Digital Elevation Model data); the vegetation types in which the plant is known to occur (Univ. of California GAP data); and discussions with local species experts. Boundaries based upon these combinded data were superimposed on orthorectified, digital aerial photography (USGS Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangles). The use of DOQQ imagery allowed us to identify and exclude landmarks such as roads, cities, rivers, and urban areas. Boundary edits to create final critical habitat involved excluding populations and habitat within the DoD's Fort Hunter Liggett.</procdesc>
