Distribution data for the Gaviota tarplant was compiled from the California Natural Diversity Data Base (CNDDB) with additional new locations provided by independent field biologists and Vandenberg Air Force Base. New location data were digitized, combined with the CNDDB information and used as the base distribution of the species. The known populations of the species were used to characterized likely topographic setting for the species (from USGS 7.5 minute maps and USGS 10 meter Digital Elevation Models), likely vegetation type (Univ. of Californa GAP Analysis Project, 1999), and the soils series on which the plants would likely occur (Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO) databases (U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA] 1998-2001), and the California State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) databases (USDA 1994) ). From analyses of these data we identified the general areas on which to focus our proposed critical habitat designations. Inital boundaries were superimposed on orthorectified, digital aerial photography (USGS DOQQs, 1994 and 1995; AirPhoto USA, May 2000). The use of aerial imagery allowed us to identify and exclude many areas that do not or were unlikely to contain the constituent elements of critical habitat such as roads, cities, rivers, cultivated lands, and isolated developed lands.
