Fish and Wildlife Service biologists identified critical habitat areas by using spatial data layers provided by the State of California Natural Heritage Program's Natural Diversity Data Base, USGS, BLM, and data from private individuals. The initial step was to digitize the boundaries of wetland habitats in Fish Slough from a paper map depicting wetland habitats published in "Biotic Inventory and Ecosystem Characterization for Fish Slough" prepared for the California Department of Fish & Game (June, 1991). The resulting polygon was the focus of our critical habitat designation. We overlayed the wetland habitats polygon on orthorectified, digital aerial photography (USGS Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangle Fish Slough and Chidago Canyon). The use of DOQQ imagery allowed us to perform a (limited) visual check of the accuracy of the wetland extent as depicted on the paper map. The wetland habitat polygon was buffered by 1000 meters to incompass adjacent upland areas that contribute insect pollenators for the Fish Slough milk-vetch. The buffered wetland habitat polygon was then overlain on an "ownership" polygon dataset obtained from the Bureau of Land Management. A small private parcel in Fish Slough was removed from the polyon. The "final" proposed critical habitat boundary was created by moving the vertices defining the buffered polygon to be coincident with the closest intersection of grid lines at 100 meter intervals in the Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system (North American Datum of 1927).
