    <descript>
Each feature in this dataset represents a release water that has been stocked by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Release water is defined as a surface water where fish stocking took place. A single release water may be a moving water such as a portion of a stream or river, or a non-moving water such as a lake, reservoir, or pond. The locations are generalized, and do not represent specific locations of stocking. Note that there may be multiple fish planting sites on a designated water during a stocking event but only one is represented for each stocked water.
      <purpose>This dataset represents general locations that have been stocked with fish by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife during the current year and the two preceeding years. It was created to provide a spatial representation of release waters described in the CDFW's statewide hatchery database. This spatial representation will make fish stocking information more accessible both to Department staff and to other interested parties and could be utilized as a tool by hatcheries to enhance fish stocking planning and efficiency.</purpose>

        <srccontr>CA_Streams is CDFW's statewide streams layer. It is used as the basis for delineating stream reaches that are stocked. Once designated, it is buffered to create a polygon that is inlcuded in the stocked waters layer.

CA_Streams was originally created by using the high resolution National Hydrography Dataset, and has been updated at a more detailed scale.</srccontr>
