    <descript>
Important Bird Areas (IBA) of California as described by Cooper (2004) and represented by points identifying the center of sites, areas, and other polygonal features. Each point supports information about sensitive (special concern, threatened, endangered, otherwise declining or vulnerable) bird species occurrence. The DFG verified digitized locations with Audubon GIS contractors, corrected some location and position errors, and added attributes for each species addressed in the IBA publication.
      <purpose>These data are intended as general occurrence support information for conservation planning and, when used in conjunction with other occurrence data, for describing range. They are not intended, and should not be used, as support for regulatory programs or as documentation of current species occurrence at a location.</purpose>

      <attraccr>Two species (Redhead, Yellow-headed Blackbird) not listed in Table 1 (pp12-16), but included in various IBA sensitive species lists were added to the attribute table. Two IBAs (Ballona Valley, Sierra Meadows - Southern) found in the text, but not in the original shapefile, were added and approved by the author. Perceived inconsistencies/errors found during this project are delineated in the Word document IBA_discrepancies.doc., which was provided to the author. The specified coordinates in the Lat./Long. fields correspond to the original projection and not this shapefile's coordinate system.</attraccr>
