This is a working version of the California shoreline.
California coastline (originally) digitezed from 1:24k USGS quadrangle maps. It is being modified, as time permits, to accomodate shoreline changes.

California coastline (originally) digitized from NAIP 2010 summer imagery.
This is a working version of the California shoreline.
NOTES ABOUT NAIP SOURCE DATA:
The majority of the coastline GIS layer was digitized from the NAIP 2010 summer imagery . However, due to obfuscation in the imagery (i.e. fog), the 2010 imagery could not be used for a small region near Lompoc, from roughly north of Ocean Beach Park to the middle of Surf Beach. For this section of coastline, the NAIP 2009 Summer imagery was used instead.
The precise section of the coastline GIS layer digitized from the 2009 imagery occurs between these vertices:
North: -120.610775 34.722854 Decimal Degrees
South: -120.609685 34.673838 Decimal Degrees
Additionally, the NAIP imagery has digital artifacts here and there that obscure very small segments of shoreline. In those cases, either the NAIP 2009 imagery or Bing/Google maps were used. A comprehensive list of the artifacts encountered can be found in the "NAIP imagery artifacts.txt" doc.
NOTES ABOUT AREAS DIGITIZED (OR NOT)
Smaller rocks that did not stand out at 1:10,000 scale were omitted for a section of the coast, from roughly Gualala to the Klamath River. All other areas of the coast, smaller rocks were done as well.
Various salt ponds and flooded areas on the inland side of levies and rivers were generally ignored.
