This layer displays terminals that currently or will receive crude oil by rail in California. Oil Change International compiled a comprehensive list of crude-by-rail terminals at each point of the transport process: Upstream (at the source of oil production), Midstream (at transfer points from trains to pipelines, barges, tankers or trucks), and Downstream (at the final destination, usually an oil refinery). The rail lines displayed on the map include the entire North American rail network. A lack of public information makes it very difficult to accurately determine which sections are currently carrying crude oil trains. As more information is made available to the public, we will update the map accordingly. The information in this database was compiled by reviewing industry publications for details on existing and planned crude-by-rail terminals, including company ownership, location, capacity (barrels of crude oil per day), types and sources of oil handled at the facilities, and any available information about crude-by-rail routes leading to and from the terminals. Industry sources include RBN Energy, Hart Energy, and Genscape, as well as presentations, press releases and other materials from oil producers and rail and terminal companies including BNSF, Canadian Pacific, Canadian National, Meritage Midstream, Howard Energy Partners, and Rangeland Energy, among many others. We welcome feedback including corrections and additional details about any of the terminals in the database. Please send feedback to info@priceofoil.org.
