Supplemental information
This dataset uses polygons to represent the land area of CSP Units and Subunits and Properties; polygon attributes are Unit name, approximate acreage, management status, and administrative code. California State Parks System official Unit and Subunit names are tabulated below, along with classification abbreviations and numeric, administrative codes in parentheses. These codes help when encountering Unit or Subunit name variations among sources. Note well: the polygon attribute GISACRES value is CSP GIS-generated and is an approximation (ArcMap 10.2.2; Last calculated 2014.09.02); it is not official. Acreages listed for Subunits should not be added to Units; Unit acreages are enclosing totals that already include all Subunits. The following CSP names and abbreviations are official beginning in the State of California Fiscal Year of their release. CSP names, codes, and the relationships among Units and Subunits are subject to change. Monitor www.parks.ca.gov for the most current information about California State Parks. Data Quality

Scope of quality information
Resource level  dataset

Data quality report - Conceptual consistency
Measure description The "Unit", as applied in this dataset, is inclusive of "Subunits". Both Units and Subunits have unique Unit Names, Unit Numbers (UNITNUM), and acreages. Individual Subunit acreages are listed for convenience, but must not be added to Unit acreages, as Unit acreages already include Subunits and other classifications. This dataset does not represent official or legal property boundary determinations or descriptions and is under continuous revision and subject to change. Copyright 2008, 2012, 2014 California State Parks. All rights reserved.

Data quality report - Completeness omission
Measure description All major Units and Properties of the California State Park System that are currently open to the public are represented in this dataset; also included are some unclassified properties, properties operated by other Agencies, and properties not currently operated as Parks. Disclaimer: This dataset of California State Park (CSP) boundaries does not represent official or legal boundary determinations or descriptions. Maps derived from this dataset are intended for general reference, planning, and/or study purposes. A quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) report or formal completeness and accuracy assessment has not been completed on this dataset. CSP names, codes, and management designations are in effect beginning in the State of California Fiscal Year of their release. Boundaries are in continual revision and are subject to change. Consult the CSP Surveys Section for the most current boundary information; contact the Enterprise GIS Team for technical, geospatial matters. Monitor www.parks.ca.gov for the latest general information about California State Parks.

Data quality report - Quantitative attribute accuracy
Measure description Each polygon has a unique CSP Unit Name and/or Subunit Name. Management status codes and administrative codes are current as of the date of release; acreage values are GIS system-generated and are approximate and not official; only Unit acreages are totals. CSP names and codes were compiled with the best available information and are in effect beginning in the fiscal year of their release (July 1). CSP unit classifications, names, management status, and codes are subject to change.

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy
Dimension horizontal

Measure description A formal accuracy assessment was not performed. CSP boundary horizontal accuracy is estimated to be consistent with that of 1:24000-scale USGS quads.

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy
Dimension vertical

Measure description No vertical (elevation) data are included in this dataset. California State Park elevations range from a low of 230 feet below sea-level in the Salton Sea State Recreation Area (SRA), to sea-level in State Beaches (SB) and related properties, to a high of 10,804 feet on the summit of Mount San Jacinto in Mount San Jacinto State Park (SP). Scale denominators in the Lineage Section are approximate; any given Source may come from a single scale and/or a range of scales.

Description The GIS versions of CSP park boundary polygons do not represent official or legal boundary determinations or descriptions. The polygons are assembled by the CSP Enterprise GIS Team from the best available sources, including current CSP Surveys Section Land Ownership Record (LOR) maps, County Assessor parcel maps or data, historical LOR Maps, and USGS quads, at various scales. The polygons are output to mult-part shapefile format under ESRI ArcGis 10.2.2; FGDC-standard metadata are initially processed under ArcGis 9.3.1 and then imported/upgraded into ArcGis 10.2.2. Output data and metadata are compressed into ZIP format and posted for public download at Online_Linkage: http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/862/files/castateparksbdys2014a.zip; Download content is subject to change. List of values
Value DPR Unit or Property
Description Park Units are areas owned in fee title or leased from other agencies. Park Units ending with a classification type (SP, SB, SHP, etc.) have been classified by the California Parks and Recreation Commission. A unit's classification defines appropriate resource protection and use.
Enumerated domain value definition source California State Parks Commission

Value DPR Natural Preserve (NP)
Description Distinct, non-marine areas of outstanding natural or scientific significance established within the boundaries of other state park system units. The purpose of natural preserves shall be to preserve such features as rare or endangered plant and animal species and their supporting ecosystems, representative examples of plant or animal communities existing in California prior to the impact of civilization, geological features illustrative of geological processes, significant fossil occurrences or geological features of cultural or economic interest, or topographic features illustrative of representative or unique biogeographical patterns. Areas set aside as natural preserves shall be of sufficient size to allow, where possible, the natural dynamics of ecological interaction to continue without interference, and to provide, in all cases, a practicable management unit. Habitat manipulation shall be permitted only in those areas found by scientific analysis to require manipulation to preserve the species or associations that constitute the basis for the establishment of the natural preserve.
Enumerated domain value definition source Public Resource Code 5019.71

Value DPR Cultural Preserve (CP)
Description Distinct, non-marine areas of outstanding cultural interest established within the boundaries of other state park system units for protecting such features as sites, buildings, or zones which represent significant places or events in the flow of human experience in California.
Enumerated domain value definition source Public Resources Code 5019.74

Value DPR State Wilderness (SW)
Description Areas where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man and where man himself is a visitor who does not remain. A state wilderness if further defined to mean an area of relatively undeveloped state-owned or leased lands which has retained its primeval character and influence or has been substantially restored to a near-natural appearance, without permanent improvements or human habitation, other than semi-improved campgrounds, or structures which existed at the time of classification of the area as a state wilderness and which the State Park and Recreation Commission has determined may be maintained and used in a manner compatible with the preservation of the wilderness environment, or primitive latrines, which is protected and managed so as to preserve its natural conditions, and which: a) Appears generally to have been affected primarily by the forces of nature, with the imprint of man's work substantially unnoticeable., b) Has outstanding opportunities for solitude or a primitive and unconfined type of recreation, c) consists of at least 5,000 acres of land, either by itself or in combination with contiguous areas possessing wilderness characteristics, or is of sufficient size as to make practicable its preservation and use in an unimpaired condition. D) may also contain ecological, geological, or other features of scientific, educational, scenic, or historical value. State wildernesses may be established within the boundaries of other state park system units.
Enumerated domain value definition source Public Resources Code 5019.68; See also California Wilderness Act, Public Resources Code 5093.30 - 5093.40

Value Underwater Park portion
Description Areas of State Parks, leased from the State Lands Commission, or acquired in fee, and identified as underwater park areas. The term "underwater park has long been used informally by the Department and has appeared in many publications and documents. It has, however no official (legislative or administrative) basis or standing. These underwater parks do not have specific individual names; they are an integral part of the classified units in which they are situated. In 2000, the Legislature created five new unit classifications which apply only to underwater or marine areas. It is expected that, in the future most of the State Park System's "underwater parks" will receive one of these new classifications and thereby will become individual units separate from the units of which they are now a part.
Enumerated domain value definition source California State Parks, Planning Milestones, List 4

Value Cooperative Mgmt Area
Description Areas managed cooperatively by CSP and another entity. Examples include lands within a park unit owned by CSP or lands owned by other entities where management responsibilities and/or restrictions are shared. Other examples are road easements or rights-of-way that CSP holds on land owned by another entity, or conservation easements owned by other entities
Enumerated domain value definition source California State Parks and Cooperating Agencies

Value DPR Unit Operated by Others
Description These classified units or unclassified properties, while part of the State Park System, are not operated by California State Parks on a day-to-day basis. Local government agencies or non-profit organizations manage the units for the Department under the terms of an operating agreement or concessions contract.
Enumerated domain value definition source California State Parks, Planning Milestones, List 10

Value SMR Portion of DPR Unit
Description State Marine Reserve (SMR) Units are those designated under the Marine Life Protection Act as Marine Managed Areas, to-date without California Department of Fish and Wildlife (was Dept. of Fish and Game) concurrence.
Enumerated domain value definition source DPR Planning Milestones; Public Resources Code Sections 36600 - 36900

Description
Abstract
Boundaries of California State Park Units and Subunits and Properties as of July 1, 2014 in shapefile format for public download. Intended uses are general reference, planning, and studies. This dataset does not represent official property boundary determinations. Park Unit names and Subunit names, classifications, management status, and administrative codes are under continuous revision and subject to change, and are officially in effect beginning in the State of California Fiscal Year of release. Monitor www.parks.ca.gov for the latest information about California State Parks.

Purpose
California State Park boundaries for general reference and not for official or legal property boundary determination or description.

Each polygon has a unique CSP Unit Name and/or Subunit Name.

Logical Consistency Report
The "Unit", as applied in this dataset, is inclusive of "Subunits". Completeness Report
All major Units and Properties of the California State Park System that are currently open to the public are represented in this dataset; also included are some unclassified properties, properties operated by other Agencies, and properties not currently operated as Parks. Process Description
The GIS versions of CSP park boundary polygons do not represent official or legal boundary determinations or descriptions. Enumerated Domain Value Definition
Distinct, non-marine areas of outstanding natural or scientific significance established within the boundaries of other state park system units.

Enumerated Domain Value Definition
Areas where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man and where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.

Enumerated Domain Value Definition
Areas of State Parks, leased from the State Lands Commission, or acquired in fee, and identified as underwater park areas.
