This layer is intended to be used for general allocation of department responsibilities such as environmental review of proposed projects, streambed alteration agreements, threatened and endangered species consultations, law enforcement, and related activities. Jurisdictional assignments of project reviews and Departmental programs may vary from published boundaries.
This layer represents the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Region boundaries. CDFW has seven geographically-defined administrative regions. The terrestrial regions are delimited by county boundaries with the exception of the Region 2/Region 3 boundary which is defined as follows: Beginning at the intersection of the Stanislaus County boundary with Interstate 5, continuing north along Interstate 5 to Business 80 (Capital City Freeway) in Sacramento, then west on Business 80 to the Legal Delta boundary, then along the Legal Delta boundary north of Business 80 and Interstate 80 intersecting with Interstate 80 on the west side of the Yolo Bypass, then continuing west on Interstate 80 to the Solano County boundary, then continuing west and north along portions of the Solano, Napa, and Sonoma county boundaries ending at the intersection with the Mendocino County boundary. The Marine Region (Region 7) offshore boundary is represented by the official NOAA Three Nautical Mile Line - a maritime limt that depicts the outer extent of state jurisdiction.

Assembled the layer from the following sources: 24K Counties (cnty24k97_1 - the official CMCC/CDF-FRAP 1997 version); 100K Major Roads (mjroads - from USBR Sacramento, unknown publication date); 24K Legal Delta Boundary (delta_legal - from DWR, published 20010607); Coastlines for Anacapa and Santa Barbara Islands from the 24K California Coastline layer (State Lands Commission, published 1994); Three Nautical Mile Line (Approved Maritime Limits for California, USA) version 1.0, published 2005; and Three Nautical Mile Line (Approved Maritime Limits for Oregon and Washington, USA) version 1.0, published 2005. A small gap of missing data existed between the CA and OR/WA Three Nautical Mile Line boundaries off the north coast of CA. This gap was filled in using interpolated data.
Some inaccuracies were discovered in the 24K county boundary linework and were corrected. The specific corrections were as follows: - San Francisco county boundary corrected to extend across the mouth of San Francisco bay instead of along the coastline. - Small changes along the Orange/Riverside county boundary confirmed per documented linework corrections in another dataset (co100a/county100k from the former Teale Data Center GIS Solutions Group). - Legal county boundary descriptions were also researched at ( http://www.leginfo.ca.gov )
Added names for Regions 3 and 4.
Corrected region names as the official revised names were announced today.
Edited title of dataset in metadata. No change to dataset filename.
Previously there were 2 versions of the DFG Regions layer, one at high resolution, and one at medium resolution. The medium resolution one has been discontinued. The high resolution one has been renamed and is now the only DFG Regions layer. Also, some small inaccuracies in the DFG Region boundaries in various locations were corrected using linework from the current 24K county boundary layer (cnty24k09_1 - the official CAL FIRE/FRAP 2009 version). These corrections were done by DFG's Josh Little.
Some problems with coastal linework were discovered (probably accidentally introduced in a previous version) and were corrected by DFG's Lori "Guphy" Gustafson. Additional attributes were also added to faciliate driving directions and web page links for DFG web applications.
Updated the attributes ADDRESS, CITY, ZIP_CODE, PHONE, and DFG_URL with the current information for each DFG Region. Re-calcuated geometry for ACRES attribute, and removed AREA and PERIMETER attributes (equivalent area and perimeter attributes can be generated automatically when the dataset is imported into a geodatabase).
Updated dataset for Department name change 1/1/2013 from California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) to California Department of Fish and Widlife (CDFW). Renamed DFG_URL field to URL.
