General reference and cartography.
State of California county boundaries. Feature types available in the coverage-format version of the dataset include regions (one feature per county), polygons (may include multiple features per county), label points, and lines. The Teale Data Center GIS Solutions Group originally assembled the dataset from 1:100,000-scale (100K) USGS Digital Line Graph (DLG) data, and further edited the dataset as necessary (see the provided original metadata from the Teale Data Center for further information). The dataset was later modified by the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG), including conversion to California Teale Albers NAD83, dataset renaming, and miscellaneous edits and attribute changes. Selected feature names were taken from the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Additional attributes include general classification schemes, county names in various formats, county numbers, and abbreviations.

Converted to California Teale Albers NAD83.
Compared two different 100K county coverages currently in use within DFG: county100k and co100a. It was determined that county100k originated from an earlier version of co100a. However, county100k later missed out on some important linework changes conducted at the Teale Data Center during its maintenance of co100a (before Teale discontinued their GIS services). In November 2006, based on general comparison of the datasets and research into legal county descriptions ( http://www.leginfo.ca.gov ), it was determined that the linework in co100a was more accurate than county100k (especially for areas such as the Kern/Ventura and Orange/Riverside county boundaries). The co100a dataset was renamed to county100k and some attributes from the old county100k coverage (many originally added by DFG's Paul Veisze) were transferred to the new version. The old county100k coverage was retired. Some attribute values were also corrected at this time. This metadata file was composed using excerpts from the original Teale Data Center metadata and the old county100k metadata.
